Jet Bench top Oscillating Spindle Sander
This is the
first tool of this kind that I have used. In the past I used a drum sander
on my drill press. As you probably know, this is not good for a drill
press. The bearings are not designed for lateral pressure. This unit
is very quiet in operation. The only thing I had to do to set it up was
to remove the shipping grease on the table. All settings were right on.
I did buy the optional 3" drum sander and insert. I've used it very
little at this time, however, the finish is very impressive.
Jet does not offer a 1" spindle. This has been a complaint on a couple of forums that I frequent. I intend to buy a "replacement" 5/8" spindle and see if I can modify the spindle to accept 1" sanding sleeves. Oddly enough, Woodworker's Supply offers 1" sanding sleeves for the Jet. I will buy one to determine if this conversion will be successful.
I mounted the sander on an existing mobile cabinet. Originally the cabinet had a table that rotated 360 degrees allowing two tools to be mounted in one space. The height requirement of the sander and the Hollow Chisel Mortiser conflicted, so I choose to store the unit underneath my bench of a full-extension roller "table." This has worked out very well. I drilled a couple holes in my bench to accommodate two bolts to hold the tool in place while it is being used.
I am looking forward to using it more.
